Communities present in the area

In Malpelo no human settlements and so far all indications are that there never were. On the island there is only a military detachment of the Army of the Republic of Colombia since 1986, and the buildings and the surrounding area does not exceed 7% of its surface. Thanks to the geographical position of this island and the distance that separates the continent, Colombia has economic rights on a much larger territorial sea and certain rights over Antarctica, according to the Theory of Defrontación.
